Applying horn manure and horn silica: a practical guide for Demeter farms

The autumn date is coming up. Why the bottleneck is not the area but the hour after stirring — and where application from the air reaches its limits.

Autumn is the classic date for horn manure. After harvest, when the field lies bare or the cover crop is just germinating, preparation 500 gives root growth and soil life one more stimulus before the soil goes into winter. Anyone who only sprays in spring gives away precisely the time window in which the soil benefits most from the stimulus after harvest.

The problem here is rarely the area — on a Demeter farm at Lake Constance, even larger fields are no obstacle. The real bottleneck is time: horn manure only works if it is applied shortly after the one-hour dynamisation, on an overcast but rain-free evening. If you have to cover several areas in a single evening, an agronomic question quickly turns into a logistical one.

Why autumn is the time for horn manure

Preparation 500: acting through the soil, not through the leaf

Horn manure is made from cow manure buried in a cow horn in the soil over winter. The finished substance is applied heavily diluted, in very small quantities per hectare, in the late afternoon or early evening. According to biodynamic practice, horn manure promotes root formation, humus formation and the activity of soil life — the effect is mediated through the soil, not through the leaf.

That is why the autumn date fits so well: after harvest or into a freshly seeded cover crop, this effect can unfold before frost and winter dormancy slow down soil life anyway. Many Demeter farms in the Lake Constance area therefore rely on two dates a year — one in spring before sowing, one in autumn after harvest or into the cover crop.

Preparation 501 in autumn: the exception, not the rule

Horn silica is classically applied during the main growing season, in the early morning as the sun rises, and acts through the leaf on light metabolism and ripening. In autumn its use is the exception: it can make sense to support late-standing crops such as vines or fruit in ripening, or to strengthen a young, vigorously growing cover crop before winter. If your farm still has crops in active growth in autumn, we discuss it case by case — as a standard measure for every autumn area, 501 is not suitable.

The bottleneck is not the area but the time

Dynamisation: what has to happen before the flight

Before anything goes into the drone at all, the preparation has to be dynamised: for one hour it is stirred in water, alternating between chaos and ordered vortex, by hand or with a stirring machine. We do not take over this step — it is up to you, depending on how you have organised it on your farm.

Our job begins afterwards: we take over the fully dynamised, diluted preparation and apply it promptly, because the effect diminishes with time. In practice this means: we coordinate the flight date so closely with your stirring time that between finished dynamisation and application there is only the time needed for the approach and the flight — no more.

Why the fineness of the droplets decides the effect

The quantity applied per hectare is extremely small for both preparations — it is a matter of grams, not litres. For this small quantity nevertheless to reach the area evenly, the mixture has to be applied as a very fine mist, similar to a drizzle. Droplets that are too coarse mean uneven distribution and areas that practically get nothing.

This is precisely where the technical requirement for the flight lies: the nozzle technology must be calibrated for these minute quantities, and flight speed and altitude must match the droplet size so that the fine mist is not blown away by the drone's own rotor downwash before it reaches the ground.

How the application works

Preparation and calibration

We calibrate the spray drone for the respective application rate in advance, usually days before the actual date, so that no time is lost on adjustments on the evening of the flight. For horn manure this means: the finest nozzle setting for a very low application rate per hectare. For horn silica the same principle applies, only for the early morning. We check the area for obstacles beforehand — tree rows, overhead lines, adjacent tracks — so that on the day itself all that remains is to fly.

The flight itself

On the agreed evening — or, for horn silica, in the early morning — we collect the dynamised preparation from you, or you bring it to the agreed take-off point. The drone covers the area in parallel passes, with a swath width matched to the fine mist formation. After the flight you receive a report on the area flown and the quantity applied.

Where the method reaches its limits

Certification and association guidelines

This is the point we make first: not every growers' association regulates the mechanised application of preparations in the same way. Some farms have requirements in their certification that restrict application by drone or at least make it subject to documentation. Before you arrange a date with us, briefly clarify this with your growers' association or your inspection body — we do not want a measure that makes sense in itself to end up causing a problem with certification. This is one of the few points at which we openly say: ask there first, not us.

Weather, wind and time windows

Both preparations demand narrow weather windows — horn manure on an overcast, calm evening, horn silica on a clear, sunny morning. If there is too much wind at the agreed time, we forgo the flight, because otherwise the fine mist drifts off instead of landing where it should. That can mean postponing at short notice, sometimes by a day, sometimes by several. Anyone who insists on a fixed calendar date will not be happy with the way we work — we follow the weather and the preparation, not the other way round.

When application by hand remains the better choice

For very small areas, home gardens or individual tree rows in orchards, classic application by hand or knapsack sprayer is often more practical — the setup effort for calibration and approach only pays off above a certain area size. On small-scale, nested areas with many obstacles, application by hand can also be faster. From the enquiry to the applied preparation

You register your requirement via the order portal, with area, crop and preferred period. We coordinate the exact date with you — depending on the weather, your dynamisation and, for horn manure, the suitable evening window. On the day we take over the fully dynamised preparation, calibrate one last time and fly the area in a single pass.

A word on scheduling beyond the individual farm: because the narrow evening or morning window applies to everyone in the region at roughly the same time, we plan preparation flights in the season as a tour across several farms on one evening or morning. That works well if the areas are not too far apart geographically and you register your requirement early — the later the enquiry comes, the tighter it gets to still fit you in. If you value the sowing calendar or particular constellation days, state this when registering so that we align the date accordingly instead of shifting it afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to dynamise the preparation myself, or do you take care of that?

Dynamisation is up to you. We take over the fully stirred, diluted preparation and apply it promptly — the shorter the time between stirring and application, the better.

How large does my area have to be for the drone job to be worthwhile?

That depends on the shape of the area and the obstacles, not just on the sheer size. For very small or heavily fragmented areas, application by hand is often more practical. Talk to us and we will give you an honest estimate for your specific area.

Is drone application compatible with my Demeter certification?

The growers' associations regulate this differently. Clarify it in advance directly with your association or your inspection body before you arrange a date with us.

What happens if too much wind comes up on the agreed evening?

Then we postpone. The fine mist cannot tolerate any significant wind — better to fly one or two days later than to mist an area unevenly.

Can you also apply horn silica in spring?

Yes, that is actually the more classic date for preparation 501. For autumn: if you have a need for it, we discuss it case by case.

The drone does not answer the substantive question of when and how often a farm uses these preparations — that remains a decision of your biodynamic practice and, where applicable, your growers' association.
