An arable farm in the Linzgau wants to green three fields after the cereal harvest with a mustard, oil radish and phacelia mixture at 25 kg per hectare. After the drought summer the soil is hard; the drill would only get in after cultivating. We fly in one morning ahead of the forecast rain.
As pre-harvest seeding one to two weeks before combining into the standing crop, or straight after harvest into the stubble. What matters is a rain window in the days that follow; that is what we schedule around.
About 20 to 30 percent more than drilling, because the seed lies on the surface. In dry conditions we allow a factor of 1.5. Fine-seeded mixtures establish most reliably from the air.
Yes, if there is moisture. Volunteer cereals and straw as mulch even help. If you can, roll or harrow shallowly afterwards; it is not essential.
